Calculate your ideal healthy weight

Calculate your ideal healthy weightOne of the most common health questions that people ask is ” how do you calculate your ideal healthy weight?” In this post, we will cover how to calculate if your current weight is within the healthy range.

To work out your ideal weight you need to take into account the composition of your body – how much of your weight is bone & muscle compared to the amount of body fat you carry. A healthy body fat ratio is at most 20% of a man’s total weight and 30% of a woman’s.

One way to calculate your ideal healthy weight is the Body Mass Index (BMI) scale. BMI measures your weight in comparison to your height. It works by dividing your weight in kilos by the square of your height in meters. As an example if someone’s height was 1.75m and their weight was 70kg, the square of their height would be 3.0625m, and 70/3.0625 would give them a BMI score of 22.86.

Many people believe the BMI scale to be inaccurate as it doesn’t take muscle mass into account, but it is still widely recognized as the best indicator of potential weight problems. Others maintain though that waist-hip ratio is a better way to calculate your ideal healthy weight.

Most global health organizations agree that a BMI score of less than 18.5 is deemed underweight, a score between 18.5 and 25 is ideal, and that a person with a BMI between 25 and 30 is classed as overweight. Someone with a BMI score higher than 30 would be considered to be obese.

A healthy diet and good exercise routine will usually resolve problems with being overweight – without any need for medical assistance. Steer clear of foods that are high in saturated fat, and avoid carbohydrates in the evenings. A good high-carb breakfast in the morning will give your body a good source of slow release energy, which should reduce the temptation to snack before lunch.

The Body Mass Index is not always 100% accurate, so don’t be too worried if you weigh more or less than the recommended weight range when you calculate your ideal healthy weight. However if your score says you are extremely over or underweight you should consult a doctor, as it could be a sign of other health problems.
